What is Roomster?

Roomster is the world's largest online social network for roommates with over 1.5 million profiles and 4 million active users. Roomster is a powerful community that is dedicated to connecting people with housing such as apartments, flats, room rentals and sublets.

What is the difference between a Basic Account and a Subscription Account?

Creating a profile on Roomster is free. This "Basic Account" allows you to search, post & contact all our members for free. This type of account gives you access to roommates from all over the world. You are able to:

  1. Post listings
  2. Bookmark members of your liking
  3. Send emails
  4. Respond to members' questions

A "Subscription" gets you all the functionality of a "Basic Account" plus access to a secure private mailbox and the social connect features. "Full Membership" rates are flexible. Rates start at $5.95 for 3 days of full access, $14.95 for 2 weeks of full access, or $29.95 for 4 weeks of full access. All subscriptions are automatically renewed (up to a maximum of three times or until canceled) to ensure uninterrupted access to your Roomster messages.

3 day trial subscriptions are renewed for additional 30 days for $29.95 and continue to be renewed every 30 days up to a maximum of three times or until canceled. 2 week trial subscriptions are renewed for additional 30 days for $29.95 and continue to be renewed every 30 days up to a maximum of three times or until canceled. 4 week trial subscriptions are renewed for additional 30 days for $29.95 and continue to be renewed every 30 days up to a maximum of three times or until canceled as per the Terms Of Use.

How do I cancel my paid subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at anytime. After the cancelation you will still have full access to the mailbox for the duration of your paid period, but it will not be renewed.

How can I see the messages in my mailbox?

You can use your private mailbox on Roomster by purchasing a subscription.

How can I upload pictures and videos to my profile?

You first click on “Edit Profile” followed by “Personal Info” where you'll notice the tabs right underneath it. Click on either “Pictures” or “Videos” to upload.

How long will my profile remain active?

Your profile may remain active as long as you need our services. When you are done with your current search you can disable your account at anytime. Your profile will no longer appear in search results and you will stop receiving notices. For your convenience you will always be able to login to your account, contact help desk, access your account pages and can enable your account at any time for future searches.

Do you keep my personal information private?

We will not post your name, address, phone number, or e-mail address anywhere on the Roomster site, unless you enter this information in non-sanctioned areas, such as in the first name field. We recommend that you not divulge this information until you feel comfortable with your potential roommates. Additionally, we will never disclose or sell your personal information to outside parties.

What is Social Connect?

Social Connect is a communication tool used between you and other users on the site and it allows you to contact other users via telephone or mobile phone or on popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google +, and MySpace.

I am having problems logging in. What do I do?

On the login page there is a "forgot your password?" link. This link brings you to the "forgot password page". To use this feature, enter the email address you used when setting up your Roomster account and press continue. Roomster will send your password to this email address only. Delivery time should be under 1 minute.

How do I notify Roomster of an unethical or inappropriate profile?

If you think that there is an unethical profile on Roomster, try our "report user" system. Unethical profiles may include: celebrity, nude or fake photos, hate language, other roommate services, commercial postings, spammers and scammers. As soon as you click "report user" on a profile we will investigate the questioned profile. If the profile is found to be unethical we will remove it.

Can I access Roomster on Facebook?

Roomster has a Facebook application. It can be added by going here. The Roomster application for Facebook allows you to access all Roomster features and functionality including your account on Facebook. If you haven't already created an account on our site you can create one after you add the application; if you do already have an account you can link your accounts. There is an "already have a Roomster account?" link on the applications homepage. Enter in the same email address & password that you use to access Roomster and use the "link my account" button. Until you "unlink" your account you will access Roomster exclusively on Facebook.

Managing Your Account

How do I edit my profile?

Roomster makes the editing of your profile easy. All you need to do is click on "Account" then “Edit Profile” and there you'll find your personal information, ready to be changed if need be.

I forgot my password. What do I do?

If you have forgotten your password, please click here and enter the email address you used when you signed up for Roomster. We will send your password to that email address. This is an automated process. Please allow up to 1 or 2 minute(s) for delivery.

I would like to change my password. What do I do?

If you would like to change your password, all you need to do is click on “Account” and you'll notice the “Change” option on the far right of Password.

How do I sign up for an account?

Once you access Roomster.com, you'll be able to see the “Sign Up” button at the top, next to the "Log In" button. Click the “Sign Up” button and you'll be redirected to the sign up page where you can begin the process.

Create your personal profile with information about yourself, your place (if you have one), your personality, what you are looking for, add questions for others to answer, and add interest & tags so like-minded members can find you more easily. You can add pictures and videos as well. The more you add to your profile the better your search results.

How can I upgrade my account?

"Full Membership" rates are flexible. Rates start at $5.95 for 3 days of full access, $14.95 for 2 weeks of full access, or $29.95 for 4 weeks of full access. How can I edit my notifications?

You can edit the email notifications you receive by first clicking on “Account” followed by the “Notifications” tab. There you'll be able to unclick the options you don't desire or need.

How do I disable my profile?

You can disable your profile at anytime. Disabling your profile will end all basic services, discontinue all emails and hide your profile from the community. Click the "Account" link and then click the "Settings" tab. Set the "Profile Status" to "Disabled-hidden from Roomster users".

What are verifications and how do I get verified?

Verifications help you build trust within our community because they show that you have taken extra steps to prove you are the awesome, sane person you say you are. They appear on your public profile.

To add verifications to your account, go to “Edit Profile” and next to the social media buttons, add the proper links corresponding to your social profiles and click “Show on Profile” box.

I used PayPal and would like to cancel my subscription. What do I need to do?

Paypal does not allow vendor sites access to customer information, so you are required to close your Roomster subscription in your Paypal account. Click the "Cancel my subscription" link on the Roomster site. Immediately you will be directed to your Paypal account where you can cancel your Roomster subscription. Your Paypal subscription with Roomster will be active until you complete this step.

I think I am being scammed by a suspicious user on Roomster. What do I do?

Although we try to remove all scammers on Roomster via our Flagging system, we ask you to be aware of:

  1. Distant roommate offers a high-value (but fake) cashier's check.
  2. Distant roommate requests payment via Western Union or MoneyGram
  3. Distant roommate offers to send you a cashier's check and then have you wire money
  4. Distant roommate suggests use of an online escrow service
  5. People offering rooms and apartments to rent asking for upfront wire transfers before they send you the keys, but the keys never come.
  6. If you think you have fallen victim to a scam, please report the user first, then "Contact Help Desk” and let us know about it so that we can take action.

What is the Share It! Button?

Once you make a “New Search” for rentals, you will notice that the Share It! button is located on the far right tab next to the listings.

When you feel that a listing is good enough to be shared, you click on the Share It! button and this will automatically pair you up with other users who have shared the same listing.

How do I change from “I NEED a Room” to “I HAVE a Room”?

You first click on “Account” then “Edit Profile”. Once you're on the “Edit Profile” option you select the “Share Service”. You will be provided with a drop down menu that will allow you to make the switch.

How can I increase my chances of a good match?

The more information you add to your profile, the better chances you will have to land a great roommate match. Take advantage of the social connect buttons, personalize your profile by answering the questions and feel free to add photos and videos as well!

Apartments Wanted (or Tenants)

What is the Tenant service?

The Tenant service is made up of completely user supplied content. The Tenant service means that you are currently and actively looking to rent an apartment. How do I post my apartment rentals?

Your profile for posting rental properties starts as soon as you begin the registration process by using the sign-up link found through the site. You will select "I HAVE an Apartment" for account type. The next page is for sharing with the community information about the person or company who is posting the available properties. Selecting the correct "user type" (Broker, Owner, Management Company, Sub-lessor) is very important. You will then be able to upload photos and videos about you or the company you work for, if that applies. You will then add in your first property.

What services do you offer to agents, property owners and management companies?

Our service allows agents, property owners and management companies to add listings, photos or a company logo to provide more character to their profile page. All the new and updated listings will be displayed on the profile page as well as in our search results for all of our members to view. You can add, edit and delete listings as often as you wish 24/7.

How long will my posted rentals show up in search results?

Posted rentals will be displayed for 30 days after posting, unless they are edited, or re-posted. If not they will be disabled and removed from search results. You can login at anytime and edit or re-post any listing that has been disabled.

Can I list properties outside the United States?

Yes you can list properties all over the world.
