Scam Protection

Although we try to remove all scammers on Roomster via our flagging system, we ask you to be aware of scams and read these important rules to avoid fraud of any kind:

Never wire payment via Western Union, MoneyGram or any other wire service, because anyone who asks you to do so is a SCAMMER. Be aware of scammers who want you to wire money to other countries. Common scammers are from these countries: Nigeria, Romania, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Netherlands- but could be anywhere...
Never accept Cashier checks, money orders or online escrow services.
Never give out financial information such as bank account number, social security number, eBay or PayPal information.
Do not rent housing without seeing the property, incase the housing doesn't exist or is not actually for rent.
Never send wire transfers to people offering rooms and apartments to rent who are asking for upfront wire transfers before they send you the keys.
Do not submit to credit checks or background checks for housing until you have met the landlord/agent/roommate in person.

Recognizing scams:

Inquiry from someone far away, often in another country.
Western Union, Money Gram, cashier's check, money order, or escrow service.
Poor grammar: Since scammers are usually from other countries, they make a lot of spelling and/or grammatical mistakes.
Inability or refusal to meet face-to-face before the transaction.

A scam email example sent to Roomster users:

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and also for the introduction of yourself.You will have a fully access in this apartment, you really sound great but never mind i can reserve the room for you till arrival date since there is a perfect procedure that we both have to undergo before you can proceed with the payment. I am a very busy aw well as i go out by 7 am and come home by 9pm

However, If you really have interest in renting the Room just let me have the following details of your asap

FULL NAME-----------------------------------------------------------

YOUR ARRIVAL DATE--------------------------------------------

YOUR DEPARTURE DATE----------------------------------------

YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS-------------------------------------

So that i can quickly instruct our family lawyer to prepare the tenancy agreement form for you, to see the terms and condition of the contract and if you are okay with the terms and condition then you can proceed with the first rent and the security deposit to my mother in London Via western union money transfer.With that, the room can be reserve for you till your arrival date because there are a lot of people that also have interest in renting the Apartment,but my mother prefer the most serious person who pays her first. You will have to pay for first month only and the security deposit now and when you come you will pay for longer stay after you must have abided with the terms of the contract for the first month.

The signed agreement form will be send to you first through attached mail(with the scanned page of my international passport) for you to read and understand,after which you will proceed with the payment ,I'll now send you the original copy through a registered courier to your current address for you to sign and bring along with you when moving in.Have a nice day.
